The challenges of the manufacturing industry in managing product information

Digitization, globalization and multi-channel trading, as well as ever-growing customer demands, for example regarding responsibility, demand even more from companies in the manufacturing industry - especially those working with product data.

Responsibility and sustainable development often require the digitization of processes and work. Many buyers also appreciate that the supplier's subcontracting chains and the country of origin of the operations are known. For us Finns, the domesticity of a service provider can be a significant value.

Those who work with product information often come across the fact that information about the products themselves, their properties, origin and, for example, additional parts, should be updated and enriched more and more often in an ever-expanding range of channels. If the company operates in the international market, the data must be updated in several languages in many different places.

Companies in the manufacturing industry, for which product information is an essential part of their operations, typically struggle with the following issues:

  • Product information is collected manually from several sources, for example production and product development systems or documents in different folders
  • Forming marketing and technical product information from fragmented data sources is time-consuming and leads to human errors
  • Manually updating changing product information, product images and other product-related documentation is slow and causes a large workload
  • The traditional way of working does not support sustainable development

The commercial product information management system, or PIM, functions as an essential part of the company's IT infrastructure and ensures efficient and correct information flow between internal systems and customers. When information flows smoothly, work becomes more efficient and the information reaches both customers and publication channels correct and up-to-date.

How a product information management system (PIM) makes everyday life easier

In companies in the manufacturing industry, a product information management system (pim system) can achieve significant results. When information is updated only once in one data source, processes speed up, work is more meaningful and information is consistent across different systems. PIM can help, among other things, speed up the availability of products, increase sales and eliminate laborious manual steps that burden and cause costs.

Thanks to PIM, companies can focus on supporting more business development and customer experience; product information is fresh and available to customers more quickly. Product and service information is easier to manage and find, and updating websites and material banks, for example, is smoother.

At its best, the automation of product information management enhances the maintenance and enrichment of product information, making it easier to manage the selections. A lot of work time is saved, the quality of product information improves and the information ends up consistent across all publication channels, which improves the customers' product and purchasing experience.
